Tony Stewart Wins AMP Energy 500 at Talladega
After just barely surviving a mass of collisions at the AMP Energy 500 on Sunday, October 5, an exuberant Tony Stewart managed to take home the winner’s trophy. This was his first ever win at Talladega Superspeedway and Stewart certainly had a lot to be thankful for after a very difficult and trying race.
The Talladega Superspeedway is known for its ability to produce excitement – lots of it. The race held here on Sunday was certainly no exception to the rule. Things got really hair-raising just fourteen laps from the end of the race when Carl Edward’s Ford lost grip on the track and spun out. This created a chain-reaction, which left a number of cars spinning all over the track. Greg Biffle, Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Matt Kenseth were amongst those caught in the mess. All four of them are engaged in the battle for NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, so the tangle would have caused a fair amount of frustration. Juan Pablo Montoya, Dave Blaney, Michael Waltrip, Travis Kvapil and Reed Sorensen were less fortunate and were either sidelined or seriously damaged in the incident. By the end of it, Tony Stewart was able to pull out ahead of the pack. But he wasn’t about to have it easy. Rookie Regan Smith was hot on his tail for most of the remainder of the race and he even made a last-minute attempt to pass the two-time champion. Unfortunately for Smith, passing below the yellow line is prohibited in NASCAR rules.
Despite his attempts to get into first place on the last lap, it was Smith’s teammate Paul Menard who eventually crossed the finish line in second place. Officials didn’t take Smith’s unruly behaviour very well and, as punishment for his rule violation, Smith was moved back to 18th place. David Ragan finished third, Burton claimed fourth place and Bowyer finished fifth. The race set a new all-time record for leaders in a race with 27 drivers taking the lead during the course of the race. The ever-changing race leaders gave the crowds plenty to cheer for and there wasn’t a dull moment at Talladega that day!
Malaysia Gets Kick Start in A1 GP Season Opening
A1 Team Malaysia got off to a flying start at this year’s A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport season, with driver Fairuz Fauzy putting in a swimmingly good performance and taking home the victory in the Sprint race on the Zandvoort Circuit in the Netherlands on October 6. Fauzy also finished second in the feature race, making his overall performance a really good one despite torrential rainfall during the course of the race.
Actually, it seemed as if Fauzy was good to claim a neat double until a slow pit stop in the eighth lap of the Feature race, which set him back a bit, making it impossible for him to recover completely. In the Sprint race Fairuz Fauzy started fourth on the grid and managed to move up one place after Irishman Adam Carroll spun out near the start of the race. He quickly lost his lucky climb to third place when Swede Neel Jani charged through and overtook him after a few laps. For a while it seemed that Fairuz Fauzy would continue to be excluded from the top three, but after some fierce driving he managed to reclaim third place on the fifth lap. Not much later he also managed to sweep past Jeroen Bleenkemolen (Netherlands) and move into second place. In the last four laps of the race, Fairuz Fauzy made his final move past Earl Bamber of New Zealand, taking the lead and keeping it until he eventually crossed the finish line in a wet and nail-biting finish. He was followed by Bamber in second place and Loic Duval of France in third place.
Despite the fact that Fairuz Fauzy was unable to win both races, his brilliant performance in the A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport races on Sunday has ensured that Malaysia now shares the series lead with France. Both teams now have 22 points. That is pretty impressive when you consider that Fauzy’s win was Malaysia’s first victory in 27 races. The rest of the season will no doubt prove to be very intriguing as the two countries battle-it-out for series leader. Fans can look forward to plenty more great racing action before the season is over.
2008 Super Chevy Show
If you’re looking for a great way to spend your weekend, look no further than the 2008 Super Chevy Show. This year the show will be taking place at the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the first time ever and fans will get to enjoy a variety of races and racing styles all in the course of one weekend.
The 2008 Super Chevy Show will be taking place on October 3-5, 2008. No better venue could have been found for the event and the various activities will be taking place at the Atlanta Motor Speedway’s AMS infield, which includes the Media Centre Lot, the Nationwide Garage, the Pit-Road Drag Strip and the Sprint Cup Garage. Fans will be able to park their vehicles in the AMS front parking areas and enter through gate 15. Those who want to be part of all the action and who don’t feel like travelling backwards and forwards can make use of the camping facilities.
So what kind of excitement can you expect to see at the 2008 Super Chevy Show? No doubt the King of the Street drag racing competition will prove to be most popular. The competition is ‘old school’ and is timed using hand-flagged starts instead of the more modern method of electronic ‘trees’. The 1/8-mile races will only feature Chevy vehicles, providing the ultimate showcase of the immense power that these machines are capable of. Other aspects of the show to look forward to include a jet car showcase, a collector car auction, a massive Show N’ Shine competition sponsored by GM, a vendor midway, a trade show and a swap meet and car corral. The car auction, which will take place on Saturday, promises to be quite good with a variety of collector and classic cars on display at the infield Sprint Cup garage. The entire event will be arranged by Potts Auction Company. Other racing action at the event worth seeing is the open drag racing for any GM dragster, bracket car or street car.
The price of attending on the Friday is $10 for adults and juniors (11-15 years). On Saturday and Sunday things get a bit more expensive at $22 for adults. A weekend pass for adults is $32 while a weekend pass for juniors is only $12. Children 10 and under will be admitted for free.
