The 427 SOHC, however WAS made to counter this new Hemi engine. NASCAR let the Hemi race before it was ever on the showroom floor. NASCAR was/has been, always able to "look the other way" when they wanted to, to spice things up. In 1969 Ford brought it's own "Semi-Hemi" engine, the Boss 429 which handled the Hemi quite well.
