Concord Motorsport Park: When “fast” is not fast enough

Concord Motorsport Park: it’s about the need for speed. In fact, Concord Motorsport Park is one of the fastest short tracks in the country. The USAR Hooters Pro Cup holds one of its most exciting events there each year. Fans from all over the Eastern Seaboard come to Concord Motorsport Park for the North-South Shootout Modified event every fall. Founded in 1982 -- Concord is considered the new kid in town (consider, Lowes Motorsport Park was opened in 1959) – starting out as a 4/10th mile "outlaw" dirt oval. The track was paved in 1987 and came under NASCAR sanction the following year. Subsequent to the original construction, the original owner built a 1/4 mile dirt oval next to the original, expanded oval, and then extended the original track to 1/2 mile.

Concord Motorsport Park is a complex of three oval tracks located near Concord, North Carolina. The three tracks are a 1/2 mile paved tri-oval, a 1/4 mile paved oval, and a 1/5 mile paved oval. The 1/2 mile track is banked, the banking ranging from 8 degrees at start-finish to 14 degrees in turns 1 and 3. The 1/4 and 1/5 mile ovals are nested one within the other, while the 1/5 mile version is used intermittently. The 1/4 mile track is used for karts as well as some auto races.

Those events all carry their fair share of excitement and hype, but the high-banked tri-oval in suburban Charlotte, NC is braced for thrills, chills and hopefully no spills when the Redneck Racing Series kicks off on September 30th and October 7th for two back-to-back weekends of rip-roaring, exhaust-pouring “Street Stocks on Steroids” racing machines will take to Concord Motorsport Park for a historic double-feature of teeth-rattling excitement.

The Redneck Racing Series already competed at the Park’s half-mile earlier this season with 20-cars pulling through the gates. Current point leader and two-time winner in the series’ inaugural season, Jim Cook took his #00 “Big Shot” machine to victory lane on May 27th. Having also won earlier this season at Hickory Motor Speedway (NC), Cook has a 36-point lead over Rusty Drye’s #84 “Vigilante.” Drye may not have a win yet this season, but a victory in one or both of the Concord races ahead will help close the gap as the series heads into its stretch run.

It’s no secret that Concord is pretty high banked. There’s really no room for mistakes there. A driver can run within a hairs-breadth of the wall by his own accord or he can be forced to the edge by the onslaught of other traffic. Either way it’s high adrenalin at every turn.

And speaking of the need for speed, then Wingate Inn Concord is just one of several in the local area. Located just minutes away from the Concord Motorsport Park and the racing/NASCAR capital of the world. The Concord Park is conveniently located only 16 miles driving from Charlotte airport, near downtown and nearby office and corporate parks.
